About Swiftbrook Medical Centre

We chose our practice name as it has links to the history of the local area. For 200 years, Swiftbrook Paper Mills were the centre of the community in the Four Districts region (Saggart, Newcastle, Rathcoole, and Brittas). The name was taken from the stream that ran down from Brittas through the Slade and on into lands owned by St. Patrick's Cathedral. Jonathan Swift was Dean of the cathedral at that time - hence the name, Swiftbrook. In contrast, Citywest is a brand new community, that has had one of the biggest population expansions in the country in the last fifteen years, producing a vibrant, diverse neighbourhood, with a younger age profile than the national average. We have chosen the name Swiftbrook as it reflects our values as a practice - we believe in serving a community of people, of all generations and needs. We particularly value the core principles of General Practice - primary, personal and continuing care. This means that we aim to understand our patients, allowing us to provide the most appropriate care for their individual needs, based on a relationship of trust built up over time. The surgery opened its doors on the 14th September 2010, and has been growing since. We look forward to developing a long-term relationship with our patients and the surrounding communities into the future.

GP Registrar: Dr Sinead Howley (July '17 - July '18)

Swiftbrook Medical Centre was appointed as a training practice for the North Dublin HSE GP Training Scheme in April 2013, with Dr Brian Blake as the nominated GP Trainer for the practice. Each year, a doctor who is completing their specialist GP training joins the practice to learn about providing high quality GP care. This is similar to hospital doctors in training who rotate through various posts. All GP Registrars are fully-qualified doctors with at least 3 years hospital experience before coming to the surgery. Many have worked as specialists in other areas of medicine, and bring that expertise to the practice.
